Are birth control pills gateway to AUTOIMMUNE ILLNESS ? Part 1
Birth control pills cause chronic inflammation of gut.
It's high time to stop pretending hormonal birth control is safe .
NOTE : this is not medical advice ❎ For information purposes only
How do birth control pills work?
Stop or reduce ovulation(the release of an egg from an ovary).
Thicken cervical mucus, creating a barrier that prevents sperm from entering your uterus and eventually reaching the egg.
Thin the lining of your uterus so that a fertilized egg can’t attach and grow there.
There are two types of birth control pills. Both contain hormones that keep you from getting pregnant.
Combination pills contain estrogen and progestin
Progestin-only pills (are also called “the minipill.”) like Levonorgestrel, Norethindrone ,Drospirenone, Megestrol, Norgestrel, Medroxyprogesterone, Desogestrel.
Natural Progesterone & Progestin are not same!
What progesterone & progestins have in common ?
They both thicken cervical mucus ( thus preventing sperm from making their way into your uterus). They both tend to decrease sex drive.
What They don't have in common?
Progesterone is a naturally occurring hormone, while progestin is synthetic simmilar to androgens chemically.
& Progestins have side effects like thins uterine lining ,Increases risk of depression & anxiety , causes headaches & migraine , cause breast tenderness & increase risk of breast cancer .
while Progesterone is Anti androgenic , reduces headache & migraines , prepares uterine lining for potential pregnancy , supports brain health & has calming effect (neuroprotective effect ), supports breast health.
According to recent research, prolonged use of progestin medications, particularly medrogestone, medroxyprogesterone acetate, is associated with an increased risk of developing a brain tumor called a meningioma.
Combined oral contraceptives are classified as a group 1 carcinogens by International Agency for Research on cancer .
These synthetic hormones shut off communication between the brain and ovaries , deplete multiple nutrients, cause gut dysbiosis & increase risk of inflammatory bowel diseases. The contraceptive pill negetively affects gut bacteria resulting in chronic inflammtion of the gut. Bacterial imbalances and inflammation result in leaky gut which favours overgrowth of candida . Studies suggest a possible link between COCs and increased risk of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and some research indicates changes in the gut microbiome after initiating OC use. some potential pathways have been proposed:
Intestinal Permeability: Estrogen, a component of oral contraceptives, may affect intestinal permeability, potentially allowing more substances into the bloodstream and triggering inflammation.
Gut Microbiome: Studies have shown that oral contraceptive use can alter the composition of the gut microbiome, which can contribute to immune dysregulation and inflammation.
Immune Response: Estrogen may influence the immune system, potentially enhancing the development of inflammatory conditions like Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
These synthetic hormones are nothing but endocrine disrupters but their cheifly marketed as harmless hormones !
